To constituent members of the Masonic Temple of Winston-Salem:

 

We are mailing each member of each organization that met in the Masonic Temple of Winston-Salem on Miller Street. This letter was emailed to the presiding officer and secretary of each body requesting them to send out to their respective email lists. This letter is also posted on the two temple websites, www.34miller.com and www.mcwinston.org.

 

The real estate transactions closed in August 2013, and we have been meeting at our temporary locations since July 2013. By all reports, these meetings are going well. If you have suggestions or comments regarding meeting locations please send them through your temple board representative or directly to me.

Since August 2013 your board of directors and building committee have been working diligently with the architect and general contractor. For months the preliminary schematic has been posted on the above websites and paper versions displayed on the table in the Miller Street temple foyer. We have attempted to gather input from the various stake holders for their needs in the new Masonic Center. We greatly appreciate all the input to date.

 

We are at a point in the design process where we need your input once again before the designs are finalized, sent to the engineers, and subsequently sent out of bid. You are invited to a design review meeting on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. at New Philadelphia Moravian Church Fellowship Hall located at 4440 Country Club Rd (west end of campus next to Kilpatrick Road). The temple building committee, board of directors, and architect will be present to review the plans to date and gather your input. Included with this letter you will find the most current building schematic.

 

There will be a second review tentatively scheduled Wednesday, April 2 at 7:00 p.m., again at the New Philadelphia Moravian Church Fellowship Hall. This will be the final at-large membership review held prior to the documents being sent out to sub-contractors for bidding. If this timetable holds true then we hope to break ground on the building or before May 5, 2014. You may observe some site development work starting sooner and running in parallel to finalizing building designs.

 

Your temple board of directors meets monthly during the building phase on the first Monday at 7:00 p.m. at the New Philadelphia Moravian Church Parsonage. The meetings are open and you are most welcome to attend. The building committee meets more often as needed. If you wish to attend one of those meetings, please contact your temple board representative for details.

 

Going forward it is the board’s desire to provide monthly updates via email to the various body presiding officers, secretaries, and post on the temple websites. We do not anticipate another mass mailing to all members.

Preslar, Jr. Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina has authorized and instructed us to notify you that he has called an Emergent Communication of the Grand Lodge for the purpose of laying the cornerstone of the new Winston-Salem Masonic Temple to be held Monday, November 4, 2013. The cornerstone ceremony will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the new location of the Winston-Salem Masonic Temple, 4537 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Parking is available at the adjoining Seventh-day Adventist Church: 4545 Country Club Rd. Overflow parking (if needed) will be at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road (west parking lot next to Kilpatrick Street).

The ceremony will begin at 4:00 p.m.

On behalf of the board of directors (“Board”) for the Masonic Temple of Winston-Salem,
Inc. we greatly appreciate your lodge agreeing to host the various masonic organizations (“Tenants”)
currently meeting in the Masonic Temple at 34 Miller Street while the new Masonic Center is being
constructed. During the past few months, informal discussions have taken place as to where the
displaced masonic organizations will meet resulting in the following plan. By way of this letter, the
Board wishes to officially request your lodge serve as host (“Landlord”) for the respective displaced
organization as follows:
Old Town Lodge No. 751 to host:
Twin City Chapter of Order of Eastern Star on the 1st Thursday
Regal Court No. 17 Order of Amaranth on 3rd Thursday
West Bend Lodge No. 434 to host:
Winston-Salem York Rite on the 3rd Monday
Allied Masonic Degrees and Knight Masons will alternate on the 2nd Monday
Piedmont-Pioneer Lodge No. 685 on the 2nd Tuesday for stated meetings and 3rd & 4th
Thursdays as needed for emergent meetings
Clemmons Lodge No. 755 to host:
Winston Lodge No. 167 on the 2nd Monday
Winston-Salem Scottish Rite Valley on 2nd Thursday
Forsyth Lodge No. 707 on the 3rd Tuesday
Kernersville Lodge No. 669 to host:
Salem Lodge No. 289 on 1st Tuesday for Stated Meetings and other Tuesdays as needed
Each of the temple masonic organizations will continue to pay their quarterly allocations
(rent) to the Masonic Temple of Winston-Salem, Inc. The temple Board will in turn pay the host
lodges the agreed upon rate of $100 per meeting night. At the close of each month, the Tenants will
report to the temple treasurer (Cliff Pranke) the number of nights each Tenant met, and the temple
treasurer will pay the host lodges monthly.

Each of the Tenants will continue their appropriate insurance for contents and products
liability. We do not anticipate the host lodges needing to increase or adjust their insurance.
Conversations are ongoing with Anders Ireland, the agent of the Grand Lodge and constituent
lodges’ insurance program.
Each Landlord and Tenant will need to work out specific access to the lodge, rules
governing the heat/AC, kitchen, supplies, storage needs for paraphernalia, and possible shared use
of some paraphernalia. If additional storage cabinets need to be purchased, then those expenses will
be paid for by the Board.
As of the date of this letter, the Miller Street property remains under contract to sale. The
Inspection Period has been completed and the Buyer has extended the closing date. As per the
contract, the Buyer could extend the closing date for three additional 30-day periods. Yes, it is
moving target. We anticipate closing on the property (getting paid) in the May-June timeframe and
moving out of the building in the June-July timeframe. As per the contract we will only receive 30-
days notice in advance of the closing date. Thus we will have only 60-days to actually move out and
start meeting at the host lodges. Planning is well underway so, once notice of closing is received, we
can move quickly. We anticipate the Tenants will be displaced about 18 months. It will take 4 months
to develop engineered drawings and 12-14 months to build the new Masonic Center. It is only
prudent to wait until the Board has money in hand from closing prior to ensuring architect and
engineering fees for final plans. Replacement property for the new Masonic Center has been
identified on Country Club Road next to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The property is under
contract with the Board and currently in the process of being rezoned. The Board will purchase this
property once the money is received from the sale of Miller Street.
These are exciting times in the life of Freemasonry in Forsyth County. We are looking
forward to the new Masonic Center. This facility will not only serve its individual Tenants, but
masons from across the area. Its design will accommodate becoming a community center and a
resource for masons and non-masons alike. We truly appreciate your accommodations during the
construction period. We anticipate even greater masonic unity as the organizations contemplate joint
work and cross visitation.
